Dorper lambs record solid gains thanks to lower variable costs, reports DPI

Prime lamb production topped the charts in 2024 for top performing sheep enterprises in NSW, with better prices at the end of the calendar year contributing to success, reported NSW DPI Regional Development.

Sheep gross margin calculations covered three main cost categories: replacements, wool harvesting, and fodder.

While lambs from 20-micron Merino ewes topped the charts at $32.09 per Dry Sheep Equivalent, self replacing Dorpers placed second at $28.71, higher than lambs from first cross ewes at 27.46/DSE.

“Dorpers also recorded the third-highest sheep sale income, alongside the lowest variable costs per DSE,” said NSW DPIRD sheep development officer Geoff Casburn.
